The Singapore Discovery Centre is not designed for toddlers. That is the honest answer.
SDC is not Science Centre Singapore. Young children cannot touch and explore freely here. SDC is built around guided tours, structured activities, and immersive experiences.
This guide breaks down what works for each age group so you can decide whether it is worth the trip.
SDC for children under 5
Honest answer: Skip it.
Most SDC activities have minimum age or height requirements. The Permanent Exhibits Gallery involves a guided tour that young children will not sit through. The escape rooms recommend ages 12+. Black Lake Laser Battlefield recommends ages 7+.
The one exception is the outdoor spaces and seasonal activities. If SDC is running an inflatable obstacle course or a family event on the day you visit, preschoolers can enjoy those. But they are not the main draw.
Better option for this age group: Science Centre Singapore has dedicated areas for toddlers and preschoolers. KidsSTOP is specifically designed for ages 18 months to 8 years. Read our KidsSTOP Guide for details.
SDC for children aged 5 to 7
Cautious yes, with planning.
Some activities open up at this age:
- Permanent Exhibits Gallery: Children aged 5+ can follow parts of the guided tour, especially the interactive exhibits and simulators.
- Army Experiential Programme: At $5 per person, this is a low-cost way to test whether your child engages with the SDC style.
- Seasonal activities: Inflatable obstacle courses and outdoor events are open to all ages.
Activities still off-limits: laser tag (ages 7+), escape rooms (ages 12+), and Crossfire Blaster paintball.
Plan for a shorter visit. Two hours is enough. Combine it with a trip to Jurong Lake Gardens or Science Centre Singapore to round out the day.
SDC for children aged 7 to 12
Good option, with the right choices.
This is the sweet spot for SDC. Most activities become available:
- Black Lake Laser Battlefield: From age 7. The vest and phaser gear weighs about 3 kg, so smaller children may find it heavy.
- Army Experiential Programme: Great for this age group.
- Permanent Exhibits Gallery: Children this age can engage with the Singapore story and defence exhibits.
- Crossfire Blaster: Age and height dependent. Check at the counter.
Escape rooms are still off-limits (recommended ages 12+). The rooms use intense sound, strobe effects, and fog, which can be overwhelming for younger children.
Plan for a half-day. SDC plus one nearby attraction works well. See our What to Do After Science Centre Singapore guide for pairing ideas.
SDC for teenagers (12+)
Excellent choice.
Teenagers can access everything SDC offers:
- Escape Rooms: All four rooms — The Armoury, The Basement, The Medical Centre, The Research Lab. Ages 12+ recommended. $30 adult / $24 child per room.
- Black Lake Laser Battlefield: $15 / $12 child.
- Crossfire Blaster: Paintball arena.
- Mission SG: Operation Broken Oath: The two-hour night mission is ideal for teen groups. Read our SDC at Night guide.
- iWerks Theatre: Current blockbuster movies.
SDC works well for birthday parties, group outings, and school holiday activities for this age group.
Practical tips for visiting SDC with children
- Wear covered shoes. Laser tag and paintball do not allow heels, slippers, or sandals.
- Book ahead. Escape rooms and Mission SG fill up on weekends.
- Bring water and snacks. The cafe is adequate but limited for children’s meals.
- Check age and height restrictions at the counter before buying activity tickets.
- Plan for 1.5 to 3 hours. SDC is not an all-day attraction for most families.
- Combine with another Jurong attraction for a full day out.

The final take
SDC is not a universal family attraction. But for children aged 7 and above who enjoy escape rooms and military-themed experiences, SDC offers something Science Centre cannot match. For families with younger children, stick with Science Centre Singapore or Jurong Lake Gardens.
