What to Do After the Former Ford Factory

The Former Ford Factory takes about an hour to visit. That leaves most of the day open. The museum sits at the edge of Bukit Timah, on the west side of Singapore. Nature reserves, hawker centres, and a second WWII site are all within 10 minutes.

Here is how to build the rest of your day.

1. Reflections at Bukit Chandu (10 minutes away)

The Malay Regiment held this ridge against a Japanese force ten times their size on 12-14 February 1942. The museum is small — 45 minutes will do it. The story carries the emotional weight of the entire WWII cluster. The viewing balcony shows you the Pasir Panjang Ridge and why it mattered.

Who this is for: Anyone who wants to understand the week leading up to the surrender. The two sites cover different halves of the same history.

How to get there: 10 minutes by car or taxi. Bus 61 from the museum stop to Clementi, then change to 143 or 175.

2. Hindhede Nature Park (5 minutes away)

A small granite quarry turned into a park at the base of Bukit Timah Hill. The quarry lake is green. The walking trail is flat, easy, and shaded — about 20 minutes end to end. Monkeys, monitor lizards, and dragonflies. Free entry.

How to get there: 5 minutes by car, or a 15-minute walk from the museum up Upper Bukit Timah Road towards the hill. The park entrance is next to the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve visitor centre.

3. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (5 minutes away)

Singapore’s highest hill at 164 metres. The summit trail is a 45-minute walk up through primary rainforest. The path is paved but steep in places. The summit gives you a view over the central catchment area. If you want a shorter walk, the Dairy Farm Loop is flat and takes 30 minutes.

How to get there: Same direction as Hindhede. Walk up Upper Bukit Timah Road for 15 minutes, or take a taxi.

4. Beauty World Centre and the Bukit Timah food stretch (10-minute walk from the museum)

The Beauty World food centre on Upper Bukit Timah Road has one of the better hawker centres on this side of the island. The laksa at stall 01-23 and the hokkien mee at stall 01-38 are the standouts. The shopping centre itself is unremarkable — the food is the draw.

5. Singapore Botanic Gardens (15 minutes south)

A UNESCO World Heritage site and a calm end to the day. The National Orchid Garden, the rainforest walk, and the swan lake are the highlights. The gardens close at 7pm. The main gates stay open until midnight for evening walks.

How to get there: 15 minutes by car. Bus services 67, 171, and 852 from the museum stop go towards the Botanic Gardens. Alight at the Botanic Gardens MRT station.

6. Rail Corridor (Bukit Timah section)

The old railway line from Tanjong Pagar to Woodlands is now a walking and cycling trail. The Bukit Timah section passes the old railway station building. The trail is flat, paved, and shaded by mature trees. It runs parallel to Upper Bukit Timah Road.

How to access: The trail crossing is at the junction of Upper Bukit Timah Road and Jalan Gajah, about 5 minutes from the museum on foot.

7. Haw Par Villa (15 minutes south)

A free outdoor sculpture park with over 1,000 statues and dioramas of Chinese mythology. The Ten Courts of Hell is the main draw. It is strange, dated, and completely unique. Free entry. About 45 minutes to walk the whole park.

How to get there: 15 minutes by car or taxi. Bus 61 from the museum stop towards Clementi, then change to 143.

If you only have half a day

Morning: Reflections at Bukit Chandu (45 min) → Former Ford Factory (60 min) → lunch at Beauty World food centre.

Afternoon option A (nature): Hindhede Nature Park (20 min) → Bukit Timah summit trail (90 min) → ice cream at the visitor centre.

Afternoon option B (heritage): Haw Par Villa (45 min) → walk through the Rail Corridor back towards the museum.
